It’s February 2022. I’m sat at unionbeerstore in Miami, enjoying the craft beer scene out there, including trips to trippinganimalsbrewing, 3sonsbrewingco and jwakefieldbeer.
There was just one problem. I couldn’t find a J Wakefield stout anywhere, and I desperately wanted to bring one back.
I got chatting to the guys behind the bar, asking where I could find some. The answer wasn’t what I wanted to hear: if they didn’t have any at the brewery, I wasn’t going to have much luck elsewhere.
Realising I wasn’t from the area, and had travelled from the UK in search of good beer, they let me into a secret.
In the back room, deep in one of their fridges, they had a few JW stouts stored away. They were from a few years ago, so they weren’t for sale, and otherwise at risk of being forgotten.
This is one of two that they generously gave me. I have no idea when it was released but searching online I think it was around five or six years ago.
It’s past its best, of course, but you can taste the bourbon barrel and it still pours silky smooth into the glass. It’s a 3.75/5, but the rating is besides the point.
